I’m pretty sure I’ve discovered the secret to true happiness. It’s been there all along, just waiting for us to appreciate it. Right under our noses. It isn’t wealth, or power (well not the business sense of power anyways). It’s the back squat. I’m convinced that a good back squat will fix just about anything. Hmmm…I wonder which of the candidates in our upcoming election can back squat the most? :)
Seriously, can you honestly tell me that you don’t feel better after back-squatting? That you don’t walk taller? Feel like you’ve lifted a load off your shoulders (literally and figuratively!). Aren’t you nicer to everyone around you after you’ve had a good back squat session? Maybe I’m being a little dramatic here, but just a little.
I believe that back squats will make you stronger like nothing else (except maybe the deadlift!). It works a myriad of muscle groups – check out this article: http://www.livestrong.com/article/515563-the-muscle-groups-used-in-back-squats/ and yes, ladies, it works the abs. If I could have a nickel for every time someone asks me, “what do you do for abs?”....
We back squat weekly in our gym – and the results are amazing. We had over 10 PR’s last week for the CrossFit Total.
Sarah could barely get half-way to parallel when she came to us. Perseverance and consistency in getting to the gym and fighting for every inch – and you can see from the pictures: http://www.crossfitfairport.com/Every-Day-Stuff.html that she now has a pretty solid back squat.
Kim came in and back-squatted 100# on her first try – she had no idea how strong she was or what she was capable of. Well, “Mighty-Mouse” back-squatted 225# last week when we did the CrossFit Total.
The back squat, although I love it, has been the bain of my existence! I have always been weak in that area –my a**! And after some hip-flexor tightness, I went backwards for a while, and then had to fight for every 5# gain. So after my knee surgery I was trying to tell myself not to be disappointed when I couldn’t get back to where I was. And I PR’d. I squatted more than I ever had – in my entire history of CrossFit. Pretty much made my day – my week for that matter.
So the 8 sets, 3 reps have been working. Yup, that’s us, making the world a better place, one back squat at a time.
Who doesn’t love back-squat day? :)
